Care and Maintenance of Hearing Aids
- Remove the aid at the end of the day.
- Turn the aid off.
- Remove the ear mould. For a behind the ear model, pull the soft tube away from the hard tube of the ‘elbow’ (see picture).
- Wash the ear mould in hot water.
- Blow through the tube of a behind the ear mould to remove water drops and leave the mould in a warm (not hot) place to dry.
- Re-attach the ear mould to the aid. On a behind the ear model the curve of the ear mould should match the curve of the aid (see below).
Right Left
- The tubing will need to be replaced about every three to six months
- The cord (flex) on a body worn aid will probably need to be replaced every 10-12 weeks, or sooner if the aid becomes intermittent.
- Batteries for a behind the ear aid usually last 5 – 30 days depending on the type of batteries and the aid. The battery will begin to fade when it is running out.
- Batteries for a body worn aid will last 5 – 14 days depending on the strength of the aid. The volume of the aid needs to be increased as the batteries run down. Remove the batteries if the aid is not in use for any length of time.
- Put the hearing aid in its case when not in use.
